Getting High on Strange Culture

Some things that are really weird/funny that I've noticed/want to talk about:
1) My friends at school often poke their finger in the air or put a thumbs up and say "like"(in english) when someone says a funny joke or something, in reference to liking something on facebook.
2) People are all friends here, everyone's nice to eachother and that's it.
3) We buy six cartons of milk at a time and put them in the pantry, somehow the way it's packaged it doesnt have to be refrigerated. Once we open it however we have to keep it in the fridge.
4) Every bathroom has a bidet, I don't know why..
5) We eat soup everyday, not good soup either, it's weird. My house almost smells like soup.
6) Little old ladies cursing out loud and then spitting loudly as they walk down the street.
7) Graffiti
8) No traffic lights in regular intersections, traffic lights are more or less not paid attention to/useless, mostly there is just round abouts.
9) Electronic Blinds that block out all the sun even in the middle of the day.
10) Having to choreograph a dance in gym class even though we all hate it
11) Being asked if I hate Portuguese food because I'm used to eating mcdonalds everyday. Portuguese teens insist that Mcdonalds is what Americans eat everyday, we don't have groceries or restaurants, just mcdonalds.
12) There are breaks in the middle of movies at the cinema to go to the bathroom and buy more popcorn
13) Portuguese subtitles on t.v. rarely match or even come close to what it actually says in English and it makes a lot of shows I think are usually funny, not funny and stupid.
14) People driving 110 miles an hour past a cop and a school and not getting pulled over
15) People eating cereal with hot milk
16) Ironing jeans
17) People write weird and the letters look different so it's difficult to copy things from the board cause I can't really read it
18) Being late. Everywhere

Being an exchange student I've been told many times that this will not be an easy experience, something I will have to take on by the horns. Being here can make you feel happier than ever before, days when I feel like I understood a lot of Portuguese, had a good time with my friends and family here are the best. But days where I don't understand much, have difficulty finding my way home, and feel lonely are a lot worse than down days back home. Little things like this make every day interesting and curious. The people take life one day at a time and enjoy everything they can, and I'm trying to do this too. I hope this experience will shape me as a person and shape my mind to be able to handle any challenge I face.

  1. Ahhhh weird we have like the same things on our lists! Yeah I think the traffic lights (at least in Minde) just turn red if you go over 50 kph. Like speed control.
