Escola Português

Escola Português-(Eh-sh-call-uhh-Port-oo-gaysh)-Portuguese School

Today was my second day of school, school in Portugal is really weird and crazy. Nothing has set boundaries of what's going to happen, everybody has different schedules as in not everyone is physically in class at the same time for example everybody starts and ends at different times. I really like sleeping in till 9 on Thursday and Wednesday and 10 on Tuesday. My school is under construction now they're adding like a whole new wing so classes aren't always held where the room number i, so you just find your class/teacher/kids you know are in your class because if theyre working near the classroom then the teachers don't want to teach near the construction noise. My first class yesterday was Desenho A, it's like a drawing/art class. There are only 12 kids in it, everyone was talking to me and the teacher got a little annoyed because I was distracting everyone. You have 10-15 minute breaks between each class, and if the class is longer than 90 minutes then you have another break in the middle of the class and everyone smokes cigarettes during the breaks it's really gross but whatever. Everyone's really nice and wants to sit next to me and wants my facebook etc. Everyone loves Americans and is curious about America. The portugese are really social, they're always talking and they start the conversation with you. People play guitar in the hallways at break and everybody sings all the time it's really weird. In Portuguese class today we read a poem and listened to a song in Portuguese and then we had to fill in the words of the song as it played and turn it into a letter. I have History and Culture of Art. The teacher is so mad/weird. He says "f••k off!" and a whole array of other curse words in English, the thing is he doens't know what they mean and he says lots of things in English that he doesn't know what they mean so it sounds really weird. If someone's being too loud he just says "Shut the f••k up!," "F••k off!" etc. P.E. is really weird too the Portuguese government requires(I don't know why) that you have to do a choreographed dance. It's so awkward and there are two groups and you have to choreograph and perform it as part of a national requirement I don't know, today was my first day of gym so I didn't dress out, I can't wait until next class!<--(sarcasm) For the most part I like school a lot, and I think it will be a lot beter when I can speak better Portuguese. I also like that it's somewhat small(about 500 students) and the class sizes are a lot smaller. Anyway I have to sleep now, night.

  1. The adventure begins! I love the phonetic help:) Thanks for sharing (the good, the bad and the ugly!) to give us a virtual peek into your experience. It sounds like your learning will be more first hand than academic - not all bad! Are there other AFSers in your town? It would be interesting to learn how your school compares to other Portugese schools. I look foward to following your story.

  3. I never heard that about the dance thing! That's strange! I guess that's new.

Isn't school AWESOME? I loved it.

One note: it's escola portuguesa, since "escola" is feminine :D
